We are an international group of scientists developing evolutionary understanding of various aspects of life. In particular, we are interested in stochastic mechanisms of dynamics in biology, selection versus instruction debate, selection and self-organization, selective processes in general, variability and degeneracy versus specificity in hypervariable repertoires, mechanisms of development, and many other issues that our members bring up. The purpose of our group is to promote free discussions, which are unrestricted by member's affiliation, academic and social status, age, gender, religion, etc. In our group, all members have equal status, for example a student has the same value as a professor. We do not have a president or committee, nor any nominated members. Members are free to choose any level of activity, from being simply listed on our People page, to active participation in discussions, research collaborations, organization of meetings, supporting our web site, etc. We believe that such a membership provides the highest level of freedom of thinking, and encourages the most productive and creative interactions. We encourage participation in the discussions, even if a member's background is not at a professional level in the subject discussed. We appreciate bringing up new topics in our discussions. The membership in our group is free of charge, but we appreciate contributions
from our members and sponsors. If you would like to join us, to suggest a reference, or just to express an opinion, please go to the Discussions section and post a message on our forum, or e-mail the webmaster webmaster@heraclitean.com. A couple of words about our name: Heraclitus of Ephesus was one of the early Greek philosophers.
He emphasized that the world is constantly changing. For example, he claimed
that an individual cannot step into the same river twice. Because of his
preoccupation with change, he believed that fire is the central element
of the universe. Here are some Heraclitus quotes:
"There is nothing permanent except change" "No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man" The members of our group concentrate on dynamical aspects of life, emphasizing selective processes based on stochastic mechanisms. |
